During a Fourth of July and Trump flag rally parade held by the SCV GOP on Sunday, Santa Clarita residents watching a livestream noticed a partial Confederate battle flag on the back of a red semi truck. The flag was attached to a standard U.S. flag and also featured the rattlesnake seen from the Gadsden “Don’t Tread on Me” flag.
Republican and “nonpartisan” elected officials were also in attendance, namely Rep. Mike Garcia (R-Santa Clarita), Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares (R-Santa Clarita), Santa Clarita City Councilmember Jason Gibbs, SCV Water Agency trustees B.J. Atkins and Bill Cooper and William S. Hart Union High School District Board trustee Joe Messina. None have commented nor responded to constituents regarding their attendance.
Condemnation has been widespread, from organizations like BlackSCV, the Santa Clarita Chapter of the NAACP and even the City of Santa Clarita’s Human Relations Roundtable. One statement of condemnation noted, “it is the height of irony to see what has become of the party of Lincoln.”
