Black Santa Clarita Valley stands in solidarity with the many community organizations, individuals, and political candidates who have vehemently condemned the recent display of a Confederate flag, during a vehicle parade on the Fourth of July.
We are keenly aware that some of our neighbors take pride in the short-lived and defeated white supremacist ethno-state known as the Confederate States of America. What does give us pause is the fact that several local politicians were within the presence of a flag that our forefathers Black, white and others, fought so furiously to defeat. While it is possible that the elected officials did not know the flag was being flown at that moment, they know now and not one has been out to denounce this act!
We have made a conscious choice to refrain from commenting or engaging with those who find comfort in white supremacist ideology and white nationalism. We know many are simply bent on causing the Black community more psychological pain and more emotional trauma. The Confederate flag and statues were used to intimidate, suppress and oppress the Black community, nothing more. There is no honor in flying this flag as it commemorates the losers. Additionally, there is NO room for politicians to overlook and condone this action! We need to hear it condemned, EACH AND EVERY TIME!
WE will not remain silent in situations such as these as silence is a vote of approval. Do Better Santa Clarita Valley!
We are not shocked or surprised, but we see you and we will remember.
