The omicron variant of COVID-19 has made life two years into the pandemic that much harder. Just when you all thought we were on the precipice of “back to normal” (whatever the hell that means), some closures have hit society with the two-month old variant now being more transmissive than others.
One notable casualty of omicron was the Cowboy Festival, as the City of Santa Clarita announced Jan. 18 in adherence with Los Angeles County Department of Public Health restrictions. Despite some western-themed inclusions to the SENSES Block Party, mandates “regarding vaccination requirements for staff, volunteers, performers and vendors – make it unfeasible to hold the event this year,” according to an official Cowboy Festival tweet.
And yet two days prior to this announcement, the SCV “Freedom Fighters” appeared at the corner of Magic Mountain Parkway and Valencia Boulevard to excoriate existing mask and vaccine mandates. The unmasked masses talked about knowing “the truth” by going to the city council and school boards to “educate” and “fight this with us… we need manpower,” according to an Instagram post of the demonstration. (Hey, are those “45” and “Q” shirts at the kiosk for sale?)
Without attempting to sound romantic in any way, it makes you think back to the days of when the renegades, outlaws and criminals of the Old West wore… hm, well.
