On Monday, a rope that looked like a noose was spotted hanging from a tree at Mountain View Park on Seco Canyon Road and Hazel Street. The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station was notified immediately, and when they arrived, mentioned the rope was the second one they had removed, the other being in the park on Copper Hill Drive.
NAACP President Valerie Bradford went to the sheriff’s station immediately and was told that the incident was investigated, that it was determined that the rope was a swing, and that there will be no further investigation.
“We don’t know what this is, but we do know what it’s not, and it is clearly not a swing” said Bradford. “The Black resident that walked by this today was left hurt, saddened and frightened, and she is not alone. The sheriff’s response was disrespectful and dismissive of a potential threat and rising trend. It looks like a noose. We call on the sheriff’s department to open a serious investigation immediately into both of these incidents.”
